Shaping and Baking

May 29th, 2009
Most people are still asleep and NPR is only just beginning on the radio.  Katrina & Rachael begin their Fridays preparing for Saturday markets by getting the dough ready, shaping, and baking.
It’s a long day.  The house fills with wonderful smells of anis herbs and baking bread, but it’s pretty much worth it when you see the full baskets at the Farmers Market in Harrisonburg and Staunton on Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m., and you see very happy customers.

Amidst a busy week of catering the Women’s Agriculture Conference

there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes work at A Bowl of Good going on by some great people.  While Katrina and Rachael have been racing around making salads like, Mary, Mary, Berry, con Cherry

for the conference and more fresh batches for sale at the Farmers Markets this weekend, Hank Didot (Ernie’s Dad) has been hard at work making a bar stool counter for the future cafe on Mt. Clinton Pike.  He’s taking old wood from a barn at Cross Keys (the Sechrists) and setting tile in the wood gathered from different places around the globe.  We’ll set the counter on the metal structure seen in the below photo and then pour an epoxy to make it smooth and bring out the natural, old colors of the wood.  It’s quite the project and we think you will all enjoy his hard work when the cafe opens this August.  Thanks Hank!

It’s amazing how fast the Common Good Marketplace and A Bowl of Good Cafe construction is progressing.

Fresh, Local Catering

May 20th, 2009

Katrina and Rachael do their best to use the freshest, local ingredients as possible.  For example, today they headed out the door for a catering event for the Women in Agriculture Conference with Strawberries from Evan Showalter and flowers from our garden.  We don’t have pictures of it but they also cooked an amazing “Spears Into Spring” Asparagus soup: asparagus from our garden and Singers Glen and eggs from our garden and from vendors in the Farmers Market.

This week at the Harrisonburg and Staunton Farmers markets, A Bowl of Good will have the following offerings:

In addition to our yummy soups and breads, we will offer a variety of Seasonal Gourmet Sides.  Mary, Mary, Berry Con’ Cherry, Lakshmi’s Lentil, fresh Sultan Sulatan’s Hummus and our Gorgonzola Dill Dip, will all be on hand.  In addition, we will bring back Silly Dilly Tuna – a favorite from last year!  We will also offer a Spring Quinoa salad – a fresh and tasty salad inspired by our wonderful customer Kris, and featuring local asparagus!

By the way, GREENS ARE IN at the markets!  You cannot find fresher, tastier veg.  And here’s a thought…..All of our Gourmet Sides pair exceptionally well with greens.  Entertain your friends with “A Bowl of Good, lettuce bowls”.  Something fresh and new is always….In Season!

Until next week – Eat well and take care.

Not only is the building going up fast where the future, A Bowl of Good Café, will be located, but the “Coming Soon” sign indicates it will be for real this August ‘09!  If you have a chance, check it out over on Mt. Clinton Pike and grab a good bargain at Gift and Thrift while you are at it.
