Rumor has it that an article mentioning A Bowl of Good will be appearing soon in the “Bloom” Magazine (The Daily News Record).

Katrina and family will be off to the beach for a well-deserved vacation tomorrow (June 28).  We’re hoping to get rested up before the final, home stretch in opening the cafe.  Rachael and maybe Corey will help fill in on the July 4  market so you can expect to still see A Bowl of Good in action.

Philip Hege’s Farm

June 12th, 2009

Many of us enjoy the fresh, local produce that is sold at the downtown Harrisonburg Farmers Market.  There is even a romantic quality of being able to buy straight from the producer, who from the sweat of his/her brow grew the produce we will eat.  But all romance is thrown out the window when you hear of the high risk that is entailed with being a produce farmer.

You may have noticed that we have had a lot of rain and thunderstorms over the past couple of weeks.  One of those storms brought a lot of destruction in the form of hail to Philip Hege’s farm.  Extensive destruction was wreaked on his farm wiping out most of what was in the ground; the greenhouse had some damage as well.

There are efforts in the works to help Philip and his newly married wife to recover.  We would like to encourage you to consider how you might be able to help Philip.  A good start might be to simply channel some business to him.  Customer Kris Shank-Zehr asked if we would host a “donation box” at our stand at market tomorrow.  If you would like to chip in toward a money donation to help out Philip and Sarah stop by.  If you have further questions, we can forward e-mail to Kris.  In addition, I am sure Philip and Sarah would welcome your prayers and encouragement.

There is nothing better than the smell of fresh baking bread and the warmth of hot ovens on a cool, rainy day.  It kicks in all of our senses–smell, taste, touch, even the sound of trays of bread being pulled out of the oven–all of our senses pushed to gratefulness and thanks for all the good in our lives.

This Saturday will probably be the last Saturday for Strawberry-Rhubarb muffins as my little patchs of rhubarb and strawberries are slowing down (maybe the rain and cool will extend the season a bit).  So, just to be sure–come on out bright and early for a fresh Strawberry Rhubarb Muffin or a Bran Muffin.

While you are at it, grab a cup of fantastic, organic, freshly ground coffee from Grains of Sense located at the East end of the Market–if you haven’t tried their coffee yet, you are missing out!

See you at the Market–be there early!

Krispy Kreme Merger!

June 1st, 2009
Dear Friends and Family,
A Bowl of Good announces a merger with Krispy Kreme Doughnuts!
Well… maybe not. Ernie happened to be in the same neighborhood in Richmond of a store that sold them fresh out of the grease, er, oil, so we went against our grain and ate a few.

We are proud to announce the edition of Anda Weaver who will be working with us as a summer intern from Berea College.  She will be doing everything from investigating how to be more environmentally friendly in our trash and kitchen waste at the cafe to helping us locate even more local food producers and sources.

Our son, Luther, is out of school for the summer and he will have a job description as well in helping with various activities.
