CP invites you to a Night Out!, where you can get a delicious meal, not have to clean up afterward, AND support the community all at the same time. Night Out! is held at OCP (17 East Johnson Street) from 5:30pm to 8pm (a change from the usual 5pm to 8pm for this month only) on Saturday, January 14th.
This month Night Out! features A Bowl of Good.

For your dining pleasure, we prepare a meal full of flavorful choices – four courses in all! Instead of choosing to go out to just any restaurant that night, join this delightful OCP fundraiser. Bring a friend, bring family, bring the one you love the most and experience Our Community Place’s Night Out.

Suggested donation is $15/person… but it’s ok if you want to pay more : ) 25% of proceeds go to help La Gonave, a community in Haiti, where folks usually eat one plate of rice every other day.

We have a few fun activities coming up for the Christmas season that we want you to know about.

Posadas: A Posada is a Latin American Christmas Caroling Tradition that includes some drama. Mary (played by none other than our very pregnant Rachael) and Joseph join Carolers in looking for a place to stay for the night. Homes that listen to the Carolers refuse entry until finally they arrive at the host home where carolers and Mary and Joseph are welcomed in for a party! Join us for this fun event and bring Latino friends along. We will do two posadas.
December 20–meet at the Friendly City Coop at 6:00pm (we are thrilled to collaborate this night with the good coop folks)
December 22–meet at A Bowl of Good at 6:00
Bring a lantern if you have one!

International Storytime: December 21–our good friend Ben Sandel will read us a great Hanukkah story called Latkes and Applesauce. He will also share some stories about traditions he enjoyed growing up Jewish. We will snack on Latkes and Applesauce and enjoy that as our special of the day!

Andy Whitten is gifted.  We at A Bowl of Good in the “back of the house” (the kitchen) get to have fun and joke with Andy all day.  One of Andy’s gifts is making sound effects or imitations.  His other gift is making us laugh and lifting our spirits.  We thought we would make available an “Andy Sound of the Week” so that you could have fun along with us.  Thanks Andy!

Today (August 2, 2011) on the front page of the Daily News Record there is a nice article about a brilliant idea and effort from Adina Bailey and Scott Rogers called, TakeThemAMeal.com.  You can find the article in the DN-R here.   A Bowl of Good was honored to be approached by TakeThemAMeal.com a while back and we coordinated with them to begin providing an option to “Send Them A Meal“.  Since then, we have regularly sent meals across the nation from Alabama to Virginia.  Scott and Dina have been a joy to work with and we hope their effort continues to bless people across America.

Haiti Partners (www.haitipartners.org) was chosen as the non-profit agency to receive the funds raised. $4,000 was raised on their behalf. Here is a video with highlights of the event:

Beginning last night (Monday, January 31), A Bowl of Good will be open until 8:30 p.m. for extended dinner hours!  In addition to our normal menu options we will be providing regional specific dinner specials (eg. Haitian, Mediterranean, Ghanian, Indian Specials, etc.)  We will try and tweak the atmosphere a bit too so as to make it warmer for dinner.

We look forward to seeing you hang out and relaxing after a hard day’s work!

It’s been almost a year since the horrific earthquake in Haiti and it has been the most tumultuous of years for that nation.  Click here to see a powerful slideshow of Haiti’s past year in crisis.

You may recall that last year A Bowl of Good hosted along with Artisan’s Hope a fundraiser in which over $8,000 was raised.  Understanding that a disaster of this magnitude would take a sustained, long-term effort for recovery, it was our stated commitment back then to follow up with another fundraiser this year.  Below you will find the details for what we are planning and how you can participate.

Thursday, Jan 13, Tent City!

A visual reminder of the living conditions many Haitians continue to endure.  We welcome you to camp out in front of the cafe.  Local businesses’ are sponsoring us on a “per-tent” basis.  More tents equal more support for Haiti.  Please be a part of our adventure, or just take a moment to set up a tent.  Hot chocolate and tea offered to all who brave the elements!  Tents can be set up anytime Thursday afternoon or evening.  We cannot be responsible for tents left unoccupied, but will do our best to keep an eye on things.  Should weather conditions become unbearable, we will camp in the cafe’!  Restrooms will be available.

Dinner Event on Friday, Jan 14 from  5 – 8pm.

Celebrate the flavors of Haiti!  100% of Sales will go directly to relief efforts through Haiti Partners (haitipartners.org).  A Bowl of Good Café and several Local Vendors (Red Front, Sysco, Oriental Market) have donated food and our staff is volunteering their hours for the event.  Artisans Hope will feature Haitian items in a silent auction, with proceeds going to Mennonite Central Committee’s Haiti Relief Fund.  Please do your part by enjoying dinner, knowing that you are contributing to a great community effort and helping Haiti!
