Working with JMU’s, WIC (Women, Infants & Children) sponsored program, A Bowl of Good’s Chief Chef, Katrina, is starring in a cooking program designed to encourage healthier cooking and eating. Last Tuesday the program was in English and today she will be hosting in Spanish. Eventually the program will appear on a WIC sponsored website.

We want to rejoice with the 450 or more who made an effort to come out to the Haiti Fundraiser last Thursday night and throughout the day. What a fabulous time of community, sharing, caring and enjoying the delicious Haitian food served by the A Bowl of Good staff! You helped us raise more than $8,094 and some change. $700 of that money will be going to HELPS International and the Water Filters while the rest is going to and has been deposited to Mennonite Central Committee Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. We were honored to have Couer (Haitian/American) and his wife Laura among us; Laura left the next day (Friday) to help out as a nurse with MCC in Haiti.
There are so many to thank for their effort that I’m sure we will miss some but know that your efforts meant a Continue Reading
For those who regularly visit the Harrisonburg Farmers Market, you probably know about Abbey’s, Staff of Life Artisan Bread (http://staffoflifebread.com/default.aspx). If you have tried her bread you know you’ve eaten bread from a master baker.

We’re happy to announce that beginning Tuesday, February 2, we will be carrying her bread at A Bowl of Good Café.

We’re gearing up for the Haiti Fundraiser/Awareness Day. We’re hanging Haitian art like this:

Between 5 PM and 9 PM we will be serving exclusively Haitian food – ALL proceeds will be going to either MCC Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund or HELPS International Water Filters. We are thankful to the following for helping us make this happen: Artisans Hope; Taste of Thai/Oriental Market for the plaintains and papaya; Mike Reno’s EMU Print Shop for flyers; Tom Hayman’s “Grains of Sense” coffee; and our wonderful staff who are volunteering between 5 and 9 to serve you.
Throughout the day and up until 5 you will be able to order Haitian food specials in which a portion of the sale will go to the relief efforts. We look forward to seeing you this Thursday.
Some folks have been reading and hearing about our Pho-hype and have been asking when it will be coming. Well, we can say that the steer from Highland County was butchered by Joe Cloud at T&E Meats and is curing now. Joe happens to recall his Pho-tastic days in Seattle, Washington where apparently there are almost as many Pho establishments as Starbucks. Joe is making special cuts as he remembers them – paper thin slices of beef ready to be immersed in the awesome Pho beef broth and rice noodles. You can begin expecting to see Pho specials soon after the Haiti Fundraiser next Thursday, January 28.

Thursday, Jan. 28 A Bowl of Good and Artisans Hope will be hosting a Fundraiser for Relief in Haiti and a Special Time to Honor Haitians. We will feature Haitian foods and music all day with profits on specials going to Mennonite Central Committee’s (MCC) Haiti Earthquake Fund and HELPS Int’l. Water Filters.
Between 5 – 9 p.m. Haitian food will be exclusively served with 100% of the sales going to charity. Artisans Hope will be open from 7 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. featuring hand crafted products from Haitian artisans – proceeds will be going to MCC’s Haiti Earthquake Fund. We as well hope to have more information and sharing from people connected to Haiti in various ways. Please feel free to participate and invite anyone you know. We have PDFs of flyers to post if you would like to help out.

Katrina had to take Ernie to the airport last Friday so while they were up there they decided to take a little Pho pilgrimage. A Bowl of Good is seriously considering introducing the awesome Vietnamese soup Pho,
but in order to do it we need the proper bowls, utensils and ingredients. Pho 75 in Arlington is the king of all Pho
in our minds and was actually an early inspiration for A Bowl of Good. The place is regularly packed to the gills with people of all kinds: Vietnamese, Hispanic, White, Blue Collar, White Collar, etc. Pho is made of a delicious beef broth with
