We want to rejoice with the 450 or more who made an effort to come out to the Haiti Fundraiser last Thursday night and throughout the day. What a fabulous time of community, sharing, caring and enjoying the delicious Haitian food served by the A Bowl of Good staff! You helped us raise more than $8,094 and some change. $700 of that money will be going to HELPS International and the Water Filters while the rest is going to and has been deposited to Mennonite Central Committee Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. We were honored to have Couer (Haitian/American) and his wife Laura among us; Laura left the next day (Friday) to help out as a nurse with MCC in Haiti.

There are so many to thank for their effort that I’m sure we will miss some but know that your efforts meant a

big contribution: our staff who volunteered all of their time; Artisans Hope, Deb King and The Common Good Marketplace staff; Mike Reno at the JMU print shop; The Oriental Market for supplying many ingredients; Grains of Sense, Tom Hamon; Portwood Gardens for lettuce; Tammy Sadonis for helping out with the chicken; and Dean, the Didots and the Bookers.

We are already planning on having a follow-up fundraiser next year on the anniversary of the earthquake. We figure that the need will continue.

Between 5 PM and 9 PM we will be serving exclusively Haitian food – ALL proceeds will be going to either MCC Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund or HELPS International Water Filters. We are thankful to the following for helping us make this happen: Artisans Hope; Taste of Thai/Oriental Market for the plaintains and papaya; Mike Reno’s EMU Print Shop for flyers; Tom Hayman’s “Grains of Sense” coffee; and our wonderful staff who are volunteering between 5 and 9 to serve you.

Throughout the day and up until 5 you will be able to order Haitian food specials in which a portion of the sale will go to the relief efforts. We look forward to seeing you this Thursday.

Some folks have been reading and hearing about our Pho-hype and have been asking when it will be coming. Well, we can say that the steer from Highland County was butchered by Joe Cloud at T&E Meats and is curing now. Joe happens to recall his Pho-tastic days in Seattle, Washington where apparently there are almost as many Pho establishments as Starbucks. Joe is making special cuts as he remembers them – paper thin slices of beef ready to be immersed in the awesome Pho beef broth and rice noodles. You can begin expecting to see Pho specials soon after the Haiti Fundraiser next Thursday, January 28.
